I’m actually pleased that their doing this reboot. I’ll give it a watch. I’m sure it’ll be kick-ass!

Especially the fight seances. I still get chills when they transform and use their Attack Powers. I’m going to be pleased with their newly rebooted Transformations and Attack Powers! ;D

A true fan is not a critic. … i love the new look (which actually is the manga look, so not really new). ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

  • Rohwynn

    I’m so excited!
    1) Venus has her chain!
    2) Moon has the correct broach, choker, and hair accessories!
    3) Mercury finally has 3 earrings!

    I’m so excited for this!

Wow. Frankly, I find these designs absolutely stunning. I was a Mars fan before, but this concept art makes me adore her so much more.

Is sailor moon wearing the correct brooch? Lol, that looks more like the Super Sailor Moon “Holy Cup (?!?!)” ?

I think it’s fine I love the art work and yes i know it’s a concept art but i think it’s really cool. They are sticking closer to the manga which i love and I think we are just so use too the old design that its kinda hard to picture this new art work but over time it will get better and I’m super excited about the reboot of sailor moon. I love the show and i look forward to watching it and somewhat reliving my childhood. p.s Please don’t complain, I really don’t want them to take sailor moon away again we all have waited too long to her to come on. let’s all hope that over time the art work design will get better but for now I think its fine. 🙂

Same. If they came back that would be amazing. But we will always have the original series (still have the badly subbed VHS tapes from the local Asian vendor’s basements). I enjoyed the PGSM live action and all the musicals so I’m going to give this reboot a go.

Hmmm. I’m not saying I hate the design, it’s pretty enough, but when you think about the fact they’re supposed to be 14 and how their bodies are proportioned.. I’m on board with thinking that their expressions are way too serious though. I know they’re concept designs and they’re nice and all, but ah… …They don’t seem happy, even when they’re smiling. They just look blank or even forced.

I’m really excited about the reboot, I loved the series when I was a kid, but… …Seriously fearful this is going to be a huge letdown. The designs are nice, but… lackluster? I can’t quite put my finger on what’s wrong, except the expressions and mood they give off. I’m still going to watch the show, and I hope it’s fantabulous, but I’m cautious and guarded concerning it.

Also, does anyone else feel like their hair is too big? Not in the full body shots, but the head shots?

Hmm, maybe it’s that they look too mature and developed for 14 year olds… I just know I’m going to see this and automatically put them in their late years of High School.

      • owvie

YES INDEED, the portion of their hair (especially usagi/sailor moon) is just unbelievable. the hair is so BIG that annoyed me so much 🙁 :'(
and yes, i am still watching them too *sigh

is it really too late to get these changed?? I mean honestly its terrible! Even the manga looks better than this and it was done years ago! Now I’m not sure if the anime will be as great as I thought if the character designs have taken a step back. I think its great how the story will follow the manga (and hopefully wont have hundreds of fillers) but I didn’t think they would follow the design as well :/ I’ve been waiting a year for this and I feel that they are really not trying. Compared to modern styles I was just REALLY hoping they would make it like 2014

Concept art is meant to be a rough rendering of what you will see. They will polish the finished work when doing the actual artwork. These things take time and sometimes weeks on end to perfect and work out the negative. There is plenty I am not crazy about when I see these depictions however I realize this is just concept art work and that I will see more polished work later.

  • Sarah

I agree. I think it’s weak. It has a ‘fanime’ quality, like something a sixteen year old rendered after reading a few ‘how to draw Anime/Manga books’ (http://www.mangatutorials.com/… this is apparent in the faces more than anything. The eyes have a saddened slope to them and lack of vibrancy that made the previous cast strong.

    • owvie

yesyes! i couldn’t agree more about the saddened eyes. i really love the old anime rather than the new one the old one is more fun to watch, the expression was so laughable. and the brooch in sailor moon crystal doesn’t look so good, it’s actually weird, the shape is just not right for me 🙁 and also Mamoru not using his green jacket, he is using tuxedo in his normal life! huhuhu disappointed! i thought there will be no changes in the sailor moon crystal, but i guess i’m wrong..

  • Qwop

hmmm not sure how i feel about these. beautiful, but they look more serious than i was preparing for a show that made me laugh often due to funny faces and such. i’ll reserve judgement until i actually watch it though.

  • Vbabe

Um, there are some weird art flaws in these… Sailor Venus’s hand, Sailor Mars’s leg… is it me or do they all have underwhelming facial expressions?

  • Amanette

I’m really disappointed with how skinny they are, how can they fight crime with legs that look like they’d break under any pressure?

To top it all off the legs themselves are wayy too long, I know it’s a style choice but when you do remember they’re little girls then it gets pretty ridiculous. Apart from being too long, their legs look broken before they even get to use them.

The brokenness isn’t very apparent in these forms but when you look at their senshi forms you can really see what I’m talking about with about three or four of them.

I know nothing can really be changed now that the designs are out and most likely in production but I just wish they would have aimed for designs closer to their actual middle school ages.

This criticism may be slightly misdirected. I believe the art style is meant to resemble the manga- which depicted the characters as being very thin and with long limbs, etc. Whereas I do appreciate more realism in terms of body proportions from female characters (it promotes healthier body images), in this case I understand the design choice as it is meant to match the manga. Additionally, in the manga the youngest characters (aside from chibiusa, etc.) are in their last year of middle school- making them 14, so the majority of the characters are teenagers and would have more of an older appearance than say a character from Digimon or something.

    • Helen

If you look at the manga artwork they have long thin legs as well. If you are a true fan of the series you wouldn’t be so caught up on their sizes since that is not the point of the anime or anime in general. Anime is not looking at realistic body sizes and this is the manga art style for Sailor Moon. I think its amazing to have the original series and this one since they show two different sides and will be mostly different. The style is beautiful and looks like the manga style which is what this anime series is based on. People need to stop making EVERYTHING about body image and judging fictional characters for what size they are and just enjoy it.

    • Arent

I second that. The original usagi/anime in episode 1 had even a slightly chubby face, she looked just normal, and not necessarily extremely beautiful. Which was completely ok.
