Sailor Moon Anime Complete DVDs & Blu-rays Coming Soon!

Viz Media announced hours ago at Anime Central that they have acquired the license to the original Sailor Moon anime! Starting Monday May 19th, you can watch it online at Hulu, at the moment it is region locked to US only. They also announced that all 200 episodes will be released on DVD and Blu-ray, uncut and remastered. All relationships, genders and names will be restored to the original Japanese storyline. Subtitles and English dub will be on it. The English voice cast will be picked by Naoko Takeuchi herself, who they are will be announced at Anime Expo, held July 3 – 6 in Los Angeles. Here’s what Charlene Ingram, the Senior Manager of Animation Marketing for Viz Media, said about the upcoming releases:

Limited Edition DVD/Blu-ray Combo Pack: We wanted to make sure those fans from back in the day who remember it fondly have something that’s like a trophy to put on their case to remind them of that time. Give them that beautiful release that they’ve always wanted and they deserve, reward them for being patient. That LE strategy is going to be unique and special in its own way, fitting Sailor Moon. We want it to be beautiful and worthy of what Sailor Moon means to anime and deserves to have. It’s more than just making it pretty because it’s Sailor Moon. It needs to be an avatar for a great anime title, and have a full release look across all five seasons.

DVD Version: Accessible to more mass-market retailers, going to be positioned for new fans that might not know anime.

The aspect ratio for both versions is 4:3, they will be released in half season sets. Details for the first set will also be announced at Anime Expo. At this time there is no release date yet, general target is starting this Fall. As for the movies it’s too early to tell, their priority is the TV sets. We should note that although these are “blu-ray”, this is an anime from 1992 so there are challenges but they are still significantly better than any other DVD that has come out. Official style guides and official materials were referenced to make sure all of the colors are the way they were intended to be. Below is a sample of their quality.
Stay tuned for more details about the box sets, we’ll keep updating as we learn more! Visit the Viz Media Sailor Moon page here.

It said all relationships will be restored to the original Japanese storyline, does that mean sailor Uranus and sailor Neptune will be girlfriends in English this time and not just cousins? I had a laugh at that back in the 90s when it ran on Cartoon Network, the Valentine’s Day episode when they won but couldn’t take the prize cause they were “cousins” haha I’m hoping they didn’t do that this time, it’s so obvious it’s silly to try to hide it like that..

I have a question are you able to still play these disks on a regular dvd player? I know it says Blu-Ray and DVD combo pack but I wanted to make sure.

The combo pack comes with both Blu-ray discs and DVD discs so you’ll be able to play the DVDs on the regular dvd player ^^

Can’t wait for the high quality releases, though Moon’s English voice preview made my ears bleed. Guess I’m sticking to the Japanese version in the releases again.

If anything, to me it sounds like they were trying to get an English equivalent to her Japanese pitch rather than voice – which is a tad bit silly since Japanese speakers tend have a higher pitch compared to American/English speakers. At the same time, however, if you are trying to get a similar sounding voice to the original… high seems inevitable with the young girl characters.

Heck yeah! Now this, I will try my best to buy… at least, purchase my favorite seasons should it be quite expensive. (I poor…)
